A Story of

A History in the Making

Education is an opportunity to provoke thinking, though it is often the first that deserves the most.

But in a scenario, where there is a seeker, ready to mature into a learner, then the teacher, often within, takes the lead. And in the course, freezing all others in space, this seeker surpasses into time, leaving a trail for others to follow.

This was essentially the case when a few students of M.A.M College of Engineering, Tiruchirappalli intended to go on an Educational Tour to a distant place, about a 500 Kilometers away one-way, and return within a 12-hour time frame, as has always been with others. The 12 hour extension, the management says, is a maximum time that students can bear-a-while without compromising on their right for a good rest and a sound sleep so to enable them to attend their classes, the next day, all afresh! What a noble intention, that was, anybody would guess. However, Intentions aren’t always the same as Effects. They usually are like-poles deflecting one against the other. And now, the effect was sooner felt by the students. Here is the Problem, the students agreed. And what would happen, next?

While others have thought never beyond the Routine, this bunch would settle for nothing less. And the college, for its part, would not offer anything more.

Ordinarily, under these conditions, the balance would have blown apart. In the midst of fury or frustration, something remarkable would have given a slip.

But that would not have been the dream of the father of our nation. Neither would it have been the deed of the citizens, in the making of our nation.

The students were still optimistic and perseverant, hunting for a catch within the condition.

By then, the situation was well developed, hosting most of the essentials that combine to make something, which the partakers could claim, their own. There was a Compulsive Interest to be satiated, an Action to be undertaken in the context of a Problem to be solved.

Means was as important as the End. Breaking a law was not in the making of a student. So was it, not their option.

Just two other options remained- either to accept a defeat without giving a try or to expand the Time without ripping the clocks.

The determination to trot to a further-land and return in a time frame, as good as for others, was so high on their list, that they opted to rip the Time, instead. This meant, from the laymen perspectives, not just conservation or optimization, but harvest of an entity, baffling even the finest of the Quantum fraternity. They somehow seemed to know that, it was Time that made Space.

Armed with the Knowledge, powered by the Skill and guided by Creative factors, and charmed by the Expectation of a Fulfillment, Action was ready to gush in, to the void generated by the Interest. Anything obstructing the flow wasn’t sure to survive. On the contrary, something else was to bloom.

By the first week of September, the students have found a way in, to the unchartered, cutting across the Problem. And in the wee hours of 29 September 2010, a galaxy of 175 Students from the Department of Computer Science & Engineering, accompanied by a constellation of 9 Faculties, flocked to their chartered flight awaiting them at the Tiruchirappalli Airport to say Hai! to Thiruvananthapuram!

Viewed through the solution, problem would seem never to be there. By this measure, their idea would appear nothing great or amusing. However, how simple, that was! It makes it the more remarkable. And, nonetheless, more was yet to come.

While Air India Express flight was roaring to cheat Newton, the passengers aboard were already countering Einstein, as their watches were racing relative to those, ignoring Heraclitus, hoping that every other moment was just a copy of the previous. In a moment, quiet unwittingly, the travelers have crossed the barrier of Routine and, akin to many achievers, they knew not until then, that they have made History.

This trip turned out to be the first of its kind in the history of Tiruchirappalli Airport.

After all, why had it not occurred to any, before!

This was not the first time, I have asked this question to myself and I am sure our students will continue to make others too, wonder by the same.

Transliteration

Education provides an opportunity. The opportunity provokes a Thought. Thought contains Problem. By the Power of Ownership, the Thought builds Interest. Interest manifests in Action. Action scrambles, in the direction of Interest, cutting a tangent to the Routine. Problem becomes Active. The Problem is the Guardian to Achievement. Guarding Achievement, the Problem chases the meek, or challenges the geek until the time it is overcome. When overcome, looking back, the Problem would seem to be so simple or never to have been there at all. Yester problem makes history. Knowledge expands. Education responds. Cycle continues.

Postscript:

The media quoted the Manager, Trichirappalli Airport saying that many other institutions have initiated to conduct such tours for their students.

Government of India is reported to have taken an initiative to send students into space, on a study tour project. In this regard, it is also reported that ISRO and NASA are engaged in a dialogue to realize the initiative.

Prof. J. William of Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering (DoECE) in association with Dr. R. Nakkeeran of the Department of ECE, Pondicherry Engineering College, Puducherry, authored a paper entitled, “A Novel UWB Slot Antenna with Reconfigurable Rejection Bands” in the International Journal of IEICE Electronic Express (ElEX).  It was published in the Vol. 7, No. 20, pp. 1515-1519, October 2010.

Prof. J. William of Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering (DoECE) authored a paper entitled, “CPW-Fed UWB Slot Antenna with Triangular Tuning Stub” in the International Journal of Computer and Electrical Engineering (IJCEE).  It was published in the Vol. 2, No. 4, pp. 788-792, August 2010.

Mrs B Annette of the Department of Management Studies (DoMS) in association with Dr. Joseph D Anbarasu of the Department of Commerce, Bishop Heber College, Trichy, authored a research study entitled “A study on Attitudinal Hindrances and HR practices in Empowering Woman Construction Workers ”. It was published in the The IUP Journal of Organizational Behavior in Vol., 9(3); 48 Issue Jul-10.

P Palanivel, of the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering authored a paper entitled “Phase Shifted Carrier Pulse Width Modulation for Three Phase Multilevel Inverter to Minimize THD and Enhance Output Voltage Performances” in the Journal of Electrical Systems. It was published in the Vol.6, Issue.2, pp.1-13, Jun-10 edition of the journal.

Prof. J. William of Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering (DoECE) in association with Dr. R. Nakkeeran of the Department of ECE, Pondicherry Engineering College, Puducherry, authored a paper entitled, “Ultra Wideband Slot Antenna with Reconfigurable Notch Bands” in the International Journal of Computer Science and Information Security (IJCSIS).  It was published in the Vol. 8, pp. 137-142, June 2010.

Paper Presentation

Mr.P.Palanivel, Associate Professor of DoEEE presented a paper entitled “Implementation of THD and Output Voltage of Three Phase Cascaded Multilevel Inverter Using Multicarrier Pulse Width Modulation Techniques” at IEEE ICSET 2010 in Sri Lanka during  6-9 December 2010.

Prof S Ravimaran and Mr A Sathish of DoCSE presented a paper entitled “Data Mining Models and Methods based on Multimedia Databases” at the National Conference on Data Mining, Spatial & Geo-Spatial Database Applications sponsored by Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) held on 03^rd December 2010 at Kongu Engineering College, Erode.

P Palanivel of DoEEE presented a paper entitled “Control of Three-phase Cascaded Multilevel Inverter using various Switched Frequency Optimal Pulse Width Modulation Techniques at the IEEE TENCON 2010 conference held during November, 2010 in Japan.

P Palanivel of the DoEEE presented a paper entitled “Multicarrier Pulse Width Modulation Methods Based Three Phase Multilevel Inverter with over Modulation and Low Modulation Indices” in the IEEE TENCON 2009 held during November 2009 at Singapore.

V Lakshmi Prabha and M Asadulla, students of the Department of Information Technlogy (DoIT) presented a paper entitled “ESJF Scheduling Algorithm” at the National Level Technical Symposium, held during 01-03 September 2010, in Adhiyaman

Engineering College, Hosur and secured Fourth position, in the competition.

R Sriram, a student of the Department of Mechanical Engineering (DoME) of this college presented a paper entitled “Design and Analysis of a Single Point Cutting Tool for Machined Cylindrical Component” at the 41st All India Student Design Competition 2010 held during August 2010 at the National Design & Research Forum organized at this college.

P Palanivel of DoEEE presented a paper entitled “Control of Three Phase Cascaded Multilevel Inverter Using Various Novel Pulse Width Modulation Techniques” at the WSEAS  Latest trends on Circuits 2010 conference during July, 2010 at Corfu Island, Greece.

Prof. J. William of Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering (DoECE) presented a paper entitled, “A new CPW-Fed UWB slot antenna with cross like tuning Stub” at IEEE International Conference on Computing, Communication and Networking Technologies (ICCCNT 2010), July 2010, India.

P Palanivel of DoEEE presented a paper entitled “A FPGA based Variable Switching Frequency Multi-carrier Pulse Width Modulation for Three-phase cascaded multilevel inverter at the International Conference On Control Automation Communication And Energy Conservation 2009, IEEE, INCACEC’09 held during June 2009 at Kongu Engineering College, Erode.

P.Palanivel of DoEEE presented a paper entitled “Multi-carrier Pulse Width Modulation Based Three Phase Multilevel Inverter With Over-modulation And Low-modulation Indices in the International Conference On Electrical Energy Systems and Power Electronics in Emerging Economics, at the ICEESPEEE09 held during April 2009 at SRM University, Chennai.

Mr.S.Alavudeen of DoMS presented a paper entitled “The Competency Based Approach towards Training the Teachers” at the International Conference on Competency Based Teacher education held on 09 February 2010 at Vidyaa Vikas College of Engineering and Technology, Tiruchengode.

Programmes Organized

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (DoCSE) organized a 4 – Day Workshop entitled “Fundamentals of Computers & Networking” for all the first year students of M.A.M. College of Engineering from 11 – 14 October 2010 at College premises. Mr AN Gnanajeevan and Mr V Pugazhenthi, Associate Professors in DoCSE, of M.A.M. College of Engineering conducted the training for the students. The Department also invited Prof H Parveen Begum, Head of the Department of CSE of M.A.M. College of Engineering & Technology and Prof. S Meenatchi Sundaram, Principal in-charge of M.A.M. School of Engineering to impart the training for the students on the same topic. Mr C Antony Raj, Coordinator for first year jointly with Mr S Inder Singh Mahajan, Assistant Professor in DoCSE coordinated the programme.

Deaparment of Management Studies (DoMS), conducted a one day Workshop on entitled “Research & Data Analysis using SPSS Package” on 8 October 2010.  The event was in association with SPSS SOUTH ASIA Pvt. Ltd.,. 20 from other institutes and 16 from MAMCE participated for this one day workshop.

Training & Placement Cell organized ‘MISSION 10X’ a Faculty Empowerment Programme conducted by M/s Wipro Technologies- during 08 – 09 October 2010 for the Faculties of  M.A.M. College of Engineering, M.A.M. College of Engineering and Technology and Trichy Engineering College.

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (DoCSE) in association with Air India Express, Tiruchirappalli organized an “Educational Tour to Thiruvananthapuram” in Air India Express flight on 29 September 2010. A group of 175 students from all the three years of the host department as they took to the skies on a tour from the city and back on the same day.   The students along with 9 faculty members including Dr. M.A. Maluk Mohamed, Principal of the college, Prof. S Ravimaran, HOD visited the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology and the IT Techno Park at Thiruvananthapuram to meet their academic requirements. There was time for some leisure too as the students visited the Thiruvananthapuram Palace, Museum and the Kovalam beach.

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (DoCSE) organized a Seminar entitled     “3g Mobile Engineering” conducted by Mr. Gajendran Mani, Engineering Manager, Paypal, Chennai on 27 September 2010 at College premises. The final year students of the host department participated in the programme. Mr. A.N. Gnanajeevan, Associate Professor coordinates the programme.

Department of Mechanical Engineering (DoME), MAMCE conducted a Workshop entitled “Design of Experiments & Response Surface Methodology” on 25 September 2010. Dr A. Siva Prakasam, Associate Professor and Dr  KR Balasubramanian, Assistant Professor from NIT, Trichy delivered lectures on the topic. The event was coordinated by Dr. N Baskar Third Year Students of the department of this college participated in the workshop.

Dr.S.Titus of the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (DoEEE) in association with the delegates from Trident Tech Labs, Bangalore conducted a One day Workshop on Power Simulation using PSim at the college premises on 17 September 2010. The Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering of the college organized the programme. Faculty members from 6 Engineering colleges in Trichy district along with PG students of the host college participated in the workshop.

The Department of Computer Applications (DoCA) organized a workshop entitled “XML and Webservices” conducted by Dr.Balasundaram Professor, NIT-Trichy and Professor Ravindran of St.Joseph’s College-Trichy on 17 September 2010 at the college premises. The Staff and Students of six other Engineering and Arts & Science Colleges participated in the workshop along with the final year students of the Department of Computer Science and PG students of the host department participated in the programme. S.Subitha coordinated the programme.

Training & Placement Cell organized an Introductory Session on Classle.net conducted by M/s Classle on 22 September 2010 for the Faculties and the Student Champions of the College.

Training & Placement Cell organized a Training Programme, Learners Forum of MISSION 10X  conducted by M/s Wipro, Bangalore on 16 September 2010. M.A.M College of Engineering is the designated Nodal Center for the program.

Training and Placement Cell organized a  Motivational Programme entitled ‘The Push Forward’ conducted by Mr Rajesh Fernando,  Guiness and Limca book records holder  during 03 – 04 September 2010, for the First and Second Year Students of all the Departments.

Training & Placement Cell organized a  FDP entitled “Build Bridges” conducted by Dr. Jayaprakash,Narien, Dr.Shanmugam, and Mrs.Crisilla, on 27 August 2010 for the Faculties of the college.

Training & Placement Cell organized a Training Programme entitled “Introduction to Robotics” conducted by M/s Purple Leap, Chennai on 23 Aug 2010, for the Final Year Students.

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (DoCSE) organized an Industrial Visit to Water Treatment Plants of Tiruchirappalli Municipal Corporation on 21 August 2010. This One-day Industrial Visit is organized as a part of lesson plan in the Environment Science and Engineering course in the current semester.  All the second year students of the department were explorated on Water management and Waste Water Treatment processes.  Prof. U. Senthil Nathan, Associate Professor of the Department  handled the course and also coordinated the visit.

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (DoCSE) organized a workshop entitled “Computer Networks – Fundamentals”, conducted by Dr. S. Selva Kumar, Professor in CSE, National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli on 12 August 2010 at College premises. The third year students of the host department participated in the programme. Mrs. Sheba Selvam, Assistant Professor coordinated the programme.

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (DoCSE) organized a Part-Time Software Training Programme exclusively for the inmates of the ladies hostel entitled “Programming JAVA – J2SE”, conducted by Ms. S. Delphine Marina, Assistant Professor in Department of Computer Applications (DoCA) from 11 – 30 August 2010 between 4:30pm and 06:30pm at College premises. About 21 students from CSE, IT and ECE of this college participated in the programme. All the participants were given Certificate of Participation.

Training & Placement Cell organized a  FDP  to highlight the Role and Responsibility of the Teachers. The programme was conducted by Mr Rajesh Fernando, Guiness and Limca book records holder for value communication on 31 July 2010.

The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering (DoECE) conducted a One day Workshop on ‘MATLAB” for the third year students on 29 July 2010 by Prof J.William, and coordinated by Mrs.G.Kalpanadevi, Assistant Professor of the department.

The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering (DoECE) organized a One day Hands-on-Experience on “PCB design and Layout” by A.R.Kasthurirengan, AK Tonics ,Trichy,for second and third year ECE students on 23 July 2010,coordinated by Mrs.G.Kalpanadevi, Assistant Professor of DoECE ,MAMCE.

The Department of Electronics and Instrumentation (DoEIE) conducted a seminar on Power Plant Instrumentation on 23 July 2010.

Training & Placement Cell organized ‘MISSION 10X’ a Faculty Empowerment Programme  conducted by M/s Wipro Technologies-, Bangalore, during 19 – 23 July 2010 for the faculty of M.A.M.College of Engineeirng, M.A.M. College of Engineering and Technology and Trichy Engineering College, Tiruchirappalli.

The Staff and Students of the Department of Computer Applications participated in a Seminar entitled “Research, Innovation and Entrepreneurship through Student Project” conducted by H.R Vishwakarma, Honorable Secretary of CSI at the college premises on 10 July 2010. The programme was organized by the Department of Computer Applications and S.Subitha coordinated the programme.

Centre for Entrepreneurship Development, Department of Management Studies (DoMS) in association with the Government of India conducted a One day Camp on Entrepreneurship Development, for the students of DoBA, on 29 January 2010 at Siruganur, Tiruchirappalli. The event was honoured by the presence of Mr. Elangovan, Managing Director, Hotel Sevana, Trichy, Mr.R.Sathya Shankar, Trainer & HRD Consultant, Trichy, and Mr.Panner Selvam, Managing Director, Balamurugan Engineering Private Limited Company, Trichy. All the final year students from the Departments of Management Studies, Computer Applications and Information Technology attended the programme.

The Department of Management Studies (DoMS) organized a One day Camp on Personality Development on 09 October 2009. The students of the department participated in the camp conducted by Mr Rajesh, 20^th Zone Trainer, Junior Chamber International, as the Resource Person.

Faculty Participations

Mrs. N. Shobhana, Mrs. R. Prema, Mr. S. Alavudeen and Mr. A.D.J. Rajesh, the Faculty members of DoMS  participated in a One Day Faculty Development Program entitled “Mind Management and Adolescent Psychology” conducted by MSK LIFE Clinic, Coimbatore and AIMSS (ATHMA Institute of Mental Health and Social Science) during 16 December 2010 by the Department of Management Studies MAM College of Engineering and Technology.

Mr.L.Leo Bazil, of the Department of Civil Engineering (DoCE)  participated in a Two day workshop entitled “Field survey using Total Station”, conducted by the Department of Civil Engineering of K.L.N College of Information Technology at Putapalayam in Sivagangai during 24 – 25 November 2010.

Mrs. M. Subha, Mrs. S. Vardhini, Mrs. P. Shanthi and Mrs. J. Vijaya, the Faculty members of DoCSE  participated in a One Week Faculty Enhancement Program entitled “Mission 10X – High Impact Teaching Skills” conducted by Wipro Technologies, Bangalore during 23 – 27 November 2010 at College premises. The programme was organized by the Training and Placement Cell of the college.

Mr. J. William, Ms.V.Nithya, the Faculty members of DoECE participated in a One Week Faculty Enhancement Program entitled “Mission 10X – High Impact Teaching Skills” conducted by Wipro Technologies, Bangalore during 23 – 27 November 2010 at College premises. The programme was organized by the Training and Placement Cell of the college.

B.Smitha Evelin Zoraida of DoCA participated in a Five day FDP entitled “Mission 10X – High Impact Teaching Skills” conducted by Wipro Technologies during 23 – 27 November 2010 at the college.

Mrs.V.Sivakami, Mrs.K.Sobana and Mr.Karthikeyan of DoEEE participated in Five day FDP entitled “Mission 10X – High Impact Teaching Skills” conducted by Wipro Technologies,Bangalore during 23 – 27  November 2010.. The programme was organized by the college at its premises.

Association Activities

ACES – the Students Association of the DoCSE donated the Steel Almirah to the Government Middle School at Thirupattur village on 2 November 2010. Dr. M.A. Maluk Mohamed, Principal of the College handed over the bureau to the School Headmaster.

ACES – the Students Association of DoCSE, organized an Inter school Talent Competition entitled “TRIGGER 2010” in coordination with the Computer Society of India Tiruchirappalli Chapter during 01 – 02 November 2010 at college premises. About 230 students from 18 schools across Tiruchirappalli Education District participated. Mr. M.A Mohamed Nizam, Secretary and Correspondent of M.A.M Group of Institutions inaugurated the event by ceremonial lighting of lamp. Mr. V. Jayakumar, Inspector of Matriculation Schools in Tiruchirappalli District distributed the Prizes and Certificates to the Winners during the valediction function.

GERENCIA, the Student Association of DoMS, organized a Guest Lecture entitled “Marketing –A Challenging Career” and the lecture was delivered by Mr.Xavier Raja, Customer Development Officer, Colgate Palmolive, Trichy on 19 October 2010. All the Staff and Students of the department attended the programme.

GERENCIA, the Student Association of DoMS, conducted a National Level Management Meet, VERMA 2010 on 25 September 2010. Mr.Senthil Annamalai, MD, Vishnuram Textiles Pvt.Ltd., Trichy and Mr.T.H.Radha Krishnan, Station Manager, Air India, Trichy, chaired the occasion. MBA students from 30 colleges across the nation participated in the various events of the meet. The BIG BOSS (Best Manager) award of VERMA 2010 was won by JJ College of Engineering and Technology, Trichy. The FRAGESPORT (Business Quiz) award of VERMA 2010 was won by Hallmark Business School, Trichy. The Paper Presentation (Emerging Trends in Global Business) award of VERMA 2010 was won by PSG Institute of Management, Coimbatore. The VARNA (Variety Event) award of VERMA 2010 was won by the Over-all winner of the meet, Sri Sai Ram Institute of Management, Chennai.

AMPS, the Student Association of DoEEE conducted a Symposium entitled “CALNIX’10” on 24 September 2010. Students from 10 Engineering Colleges participated in the symposium. George Anil D’Silva, Application Engineer Manager, Trident Techlabs, Bangalore was its chief guest. The programme was coordinated by Dr.S.Titus and Prof.D.Jovina of the department.

FOBITS – the Student Association of DoIT, coordinated a National Level Technical Symposium “Elixir V6”, and the symposium was conducted by the Department of Information Technology, DoIT, during 17-18 September 2010. Students from 27 Engineering Colleges across Tamil Nadu participated in the event.

ACOEL –the students association of DoECE, organized a seventh national level technical symposium called e MISSION 2K10 during 15-16 September 2010at college premises. About 175 students from 19 Engineering colleges participated in the various events. Mr. Raju, Manager, BSNL inaugurated the function. Mr.Veerendra, coordinator MISSION 10X programs distributed the prizes and awards in the valediction function.

CAPCEAN, the Student Association of DoCE, organized a Guest Lecture entitled “Overview of Civil Engineering” and the lecture was delivered by Dr.K.Palanichamy, Professor of the Department of Civil Engineering, National Institute of Technology, Trichy on 30 August 2010. All the Staff and Students of the department attended the lecture, coordinated by Prof K.Saasiekala of the department.

ACES – the Students Association of DoCSE, coordinated a Month-long Chain of programs during the entire month of August from 01 – 31 August 2010 entitled “TALENT INSPIRIT 2010”. The programme was conducted by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. About 25 Technical & Non – Technical events were conducted and students from all the three years of the department participated. The winners of the events were honoured with Awards and Certificates during the Valediction held on 22 October 2010.

INSAT, the student association of DoEIE conducted a Seminar entitled “Control and Instrumentation” on 21 July 2010. The event was inaugurated by Mr. Sheshadri Srinivasan, Professor, National Institute of Technology, Trichy. All the students from department participated in the event.

GERENCIA, the Student Association of DoMS, organized a Guest Lecture on Service Marketing – Recent Trends and the lecture was delivered by Mr.T.H.Radha Krishnan, Station Manager, Air India, Trichy on 13 April 2010. All the Staff and Students of the department attended the lecture.

Placement

The Final year students of DoCSE participated in a Soft Skill Training Program, conducted by Bllue Lotus, Chennai during 06 – 20 October 2010. The Program was organized by the Training and Placement Cell of the college.

Training and Placement Cell organized a Campus Recruitment Drive conducted by M/s Everonn for M/s Cognizant Technology Solutions on 30 July 2010, at this college for the graduates of 2009 & 2010 batch. 85 candidates appeared in the process and 8 of them were selected by Cognizant Technology Solutions. During the same drive, 200 candidates appeared for Trainee Engineer position conducted by M/s Everonn and 22 were shortlisted for the position.

The Final year students of DoEIE participated in a six day Placement Training, conducted by Bllue Lotus, Chennai during 05 – 10 July 2010. The Campus placement Training was organized by the Training and Placement Cell of the college.

Prof. S. Ravimaran, HoD, DoCSE was elected as the Secretary for Computer Society of India – Tiruchirappalli Chapter for the year 2010 – 2012 during the Annual General-body Meeting held on 20 November 2010 at IWS Hall, BHEL Township, Tiruchirappalli.

Mr R Amjad Hasan, Soft Skill Trainer conducted Mr and Ms Mamaria’2010 Title Contest on 29 October 2010. The event was part of the Mamaria’2010, an Inter-School Cultural Competition organized by the M.A.M. Matriculation Higher Secondary School. Students from 17 Schools in Trichy contested for the title.

Mr R Amjad Hasan, Soft Skill Trainer conducted Mr and Ms Trigger’2010 Title Contest on 02 October 2010. The event was part of the Trigger’2010, an Inter-school Talent Competition organized by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, of the College. Students from 12 Schools contested for the title.

Mr R Amjad Hasan, Soft Skill Trainer in association with Dr Clifford Paul, Professor and HoD, Department of Business Administration, M.A.M. Business School conducted a Stress Interview Contest on 25 September 2010. The event was a part of the Verma’10 Management Meet, organized by the Department of Business Administration of this College. PG Students of the Departments of Business Administration, from 16 Colleges participated in the Event.

A New PG course, M.E. in Computer & Communication Engineering was inaugurated by Dr. S. Arul Daniel, Professor / EEE, NIT, Tiruchirappalli on 13 September 2010. Dr. S. Sathikh, Former vice Chancellor, Madras and Governing Council Chair, the Secretary Mr. A. Mohamed Nizam, Dr. M. A. Maluk Mohamed, Principal, M.A.M. College of Engineering jointly lighted Kuthuvilakku to mark the commencement of the new programme.

A New PG course, ME in Power Electronics and Drives was introduced at this college since this academic year. The programme was inaugurated on 13 September 2010.

Prof A.Josephine Pushpa Arasi , joined DoIT, on 01 September 2010, taking the total strength of  PG  qualified faculty strength to 6.

Mr SDC Clements, Director of Physical Education of this college was unanimously elected as the Executive Committee Member of the Tiruchirappalli District Volley Ball Association for the year 2010-11, by an announcement during September 2010.

Training and Placement Cell organized a Parenting Seminar conducted by Mr Rajesh Fernando, Guiness and Limca book records holder on 27 August 2010, for the Parents of the Freshers for the academic year 2010-11.

Anna University of Technology, Tiruchirappalli selected this college as the Zone 3 Sports Coordinating Center for the Academic Years 2010-11 and 2011-12 by an announcement during July 2010.

Dr.M.A.Maluk Mohamed, Principal of this college was appointed as the Zonal Sports Coordinator for Zone 3, by an announcement during July 2010.

Mr SDC Clements, Director of Physical Education of this college was appointed as the Zonal Sports Secretary, by an announcement during July 2010.

Mr.B.Vignesh, a PG student of DoME,  has secured First Position in the Trichy Zone, in the ME (Manufacturing Engineering) Examinations conducted by the Anna University-Trichy during April 2010.

Mr.C.Balamurugan and Mr.P Ranjith Kumar, both the faculties of DoME, have completed their Viva-Voce part of their Ph. D Scholarship.

Prof. J. William, DoECE is included in the 11^th Edition of Marquis Who’s Who in Science and Engineering 2011-2012.

Mr.R.Joshua Arul Kumar, Associate professor of DoECE was deputed as a MISSION 10X Master Trainer for Wipro Technologies for the South Zone from the academic year 2009-10.

Forthcoming

DoCSE has planned to organize a Workforce Development Program entitled “ORACLE 9i” for the final year students of the department during December 2010. Mr. J. Naveen, Assistant Professor of the department will impart the training to the students. The programme comes to the college as a result of an MoU between the college and ORACLE Corporation, Bangalore during 2009 – 10. Mr. J. Naveen has already undergone the programme at the corporate.

DoECE has planned to conduct an intradepartmental technical Symposium called “Techno blitz” for all the ECE students during January 2011.And also planned to conduct intercollegiate Project Exhibition called “Gladdiators” during February 2011.

DoME, plans to conduct a Symposium in association with the Trichy Chapter of the Indian Institute of Metals during the month of March 2011.

DoIT, has planned to organize a Workshop on Network Simulator and a Faculty Development Programme on Software Testing, in the immediate future.

INSAT, the student association of DoEIE has planned to conduct an Intra-college activity “INFESTA” in the near future.

DoCA has planned to inaugurate their Student Association and to conduct an IT Forum in the near future.

Recently I was looking for quotes on dreams and came across the quote “Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.”¹ by Harriet Tubman.

I was curious to find out about Harriet Tubman and read in her biography that she was born into slavery in Maryland in 1820. She had a dream of becoming free. Not only she secured her freedom, but she was also instrumental in rescuing several others from slavery. Her dream delivered her “the strength, the patience, and the passion” to self-realization and to a social cause. The biography now illuminated the quote and showed that quotes are made not of words but of lives.

Do you own a dream? What is that you dream of? I believe that you too have a “passion to reach for the stars to change the world”.

It is all the more interesting to watch a former Chairman of a Global Consulting Firm at-work as a Member of the Nation’s Policy Making Body.

Read “Restructuring the Planning Commission” published in Forbes India, issue dated 19 November 2010. I think that it is a must read for all professionals and the students pursuing professional education.

In a similar vein, know what a 36 year old Indian born is doing at the White House. (“Digitizer in Chief, Scientific American, October 2010)

How could, the laurels secured from an All-for-Profit enterprise traded with a Profit-for-All undertaking? Does an experience in one, by any way support the other, so contrasting? If No, then alarm the Parliament and the Congress. And if Yes, then bootstrap and progress.

To answer the question above, one may examine if a street-side Fountain-boy selling “Sugared Water” of a cola major, can do anything worthy as a CEO of a high-risk technology blockbuster. A Thought undertaken is worth the Education

A few months ago, I learnt about an International Television Broadcast Series on the Secret Life of a Nation’s Electric Grid. Later I wanted to know more and the details in Power Production, Transmission, Distribution and Cost-control. Presto! Scientific American India, in its November 2010 issue, published an article entitled “How to Build the Super-grid”

I read the article thoroughly and enjoyed it. But would anybody initiate to propose an idea for India? When and Where would the Debate and Discussion develop? Come what may its conclusion, but a thought undertaken is worth the Education pursued.

Campaign for Eradication of Exclusion in Education

One day in a Health and Hygiene class, the teacher was instructing the students on preventing themselves against malaria.

The class quizzed the teacher on various issues regarding the same, including the viability of a vaccine. The text-bound teacher informed the class about an attempt made in the 1960′s and its eventual failure. (Probably the text could have highlighted on the Setbacks rather than Failures)

However, as the class proceeded, without an inkling of its nature, a dream-sunk back-bencher, woke up to suggest that all the mosquitoes could rather be caught and injected with vaccines, so to eradicate malaria, once for all.

The class had a good laugh and the teacher was comfortable with her Fudge Factor¹. For the belittled student’s part, he returned to sleep, to sooth his wounds².

The student would never know what the teacher had done to him or the rest. Voila! The 1980 (Reprint) Edition Teacher, with a pulp of credentials, recently happened to read a topic on the New Ways to Beat Malaria³.

The teacher then realized that the Idea of the student was indeed, Taller than any in the class, though his Vocabulary was not as Wide. It is explicable, the bran majored teacher reasoned now, given the opportunity and education the student has had in his past. Would that compensate for the ignorance, arrogance or complacence of the learned before the eyes of a learner, to exemplify, the teacher introspected.

Answers beckon Questions; Action beckons Response

When the students are asked to differentiate between Science, Engineering and Technology, they say that its not there in their texts. Neither is there a definition to the terms. Same is the answer when they are asked to state the scope or method of study in their areas of specialization. I was wondering if the responsible would take the initiative to sensitize the students on these areas, so to help them learn things in perspectives, in the absence of which the students would only be encouraged to learn them “As-such”, which in other terms we call rote learning.

Certain colleges have made the necessary arrangements to counter the missing link. But would that be sufficient if only a few students get the benefit? To serve all, Careers360 has made a beginning in its Engineering Special Issue of June, 2010. Should we not take the thread and pursue the lead?

In a similar note, how is Administration same as Management?

Arguably, a Question is more important than an Answer. However agreeable is the importance of an Initiative to Answer than Thoughtlessness. May my students not find me naïve, and respond less in my next class. So, here I propose my view on Science, Engineering and Technology.

Science Finds, Engineering Makes, Technology Diffuses.

Science makes ideas Reliable, Engineering makes them Realizable and Technology makes them Comfortable, each with an increasing rate of immediacy to the former.

Engineering is made Logical by Science and Economical by Technology.

Technology sometimes cuts through the Crux of Science and the Designs of Engineering, changing the Face & Scope of Most, by means never thought before.

Hope, my class of drill-bits will rest for some time, now. However I would indeed agree that, Response is more important than Action.
